I had the greatest time photographing this beautiful family in their first home together. Chana and Zach are married, and have a beautiful six month old, Evelyn. At the young age of 21, their maturity blew me away. I figured they were 26 or 27, and here they are, two years younger than me, with a beautiful home, baby, and family. Evelyn was as sweet as could be, and though she wasn’t sure of me at first, she eventually warmed up to the camera!
When I first heard they lived in the Cold Storage Lofts in Kansas City, I was a little apprehensive. I had toured those same lofts a couple years ago, and I remembered it feeling almost like a dungeon with ugly yellow walls. Thankfully, it was completely different from what I remembered! They had a beautiful apartment with big windows full of natural light that swept across their living room and kitchen. The walls were a pretty grey, and their furniture and style truly made their place feel infinitely warm, cozy and homey. After a while I realized what made their living space feel so cozy – they didn’t have a TV in their living room! It was a nice change to not have furniture pointing at a TV, but instead arranged to facilitate conversation.
Their bold red couch made for a great backdrop for photos, along with their big gorgeous bookshelf, and cute chair in the corner next to their piano. My favorite corner of their apartment, though, would be the coffee corner, with a sign that reads “filter coffee not people.” Chana works at Messenger Coffee, and is the master at making delicious coffee! They made some together as a family, perfecting their lazy Sunday morning.
I’m so grateful that Chana and Zach invited me into their home to capture these precious moments of their little family. In-home sessions are quickly becoming my favorite to photograph! There’s something so special about photographing people where they feel the most comfortable to be their natural selves.
